BLITEOTW 2009 [Jun. 12th, 2009|05:17 pm]
[Tags|, ]

Frankly.....zombies are boring. Don't get me wrong. I spent 2007 surviving and getting to the mothball fleet with a ragged bunch of survivors, aided by the ROTC crew in Davis and several bay area peeps. 2008 I didn't fare as well, getting bitten fairly early on and eventually turning the chemistry building into a raging inferno to save my soul and destroy a zombie horde attacking the building.

I'm kind of zombie survivor story'd out.

I propose, here and now, an alternate BLITEOTW. The zombie stories, as far as I'm concerned, have been done for the time being. The genre needs a break, as do our collective creative batteries. Let all new zombie posts be designated BLITEOTW-Z (Z standing for zombies, duh.)

This means that the rest of us, those of us fed up with zombies, need another threat. So, I pose 2 questions to you:

1) What should our new threat be? Aliens, robots, pod people, animal uprising, mass hysteria, secret societies, pirates, ninjas, cake-that-is-not-a-lie .....what?

2) When should BLITEOTW-? take place? I wish I'd thought of this a month ago and realized that the same tired theme would be played out once more. Can we pull it together in the next 6 hours? I doubt it. Perhaps, but I doubt it. If not tomorrow when? I nominate one of the following dates:
July 7th
August 16th
I picked each of those for a reason and I'll give brownie points to whomever figures out why, and what the relation to BLITEOTW-? would be.

So, take a minute, think about you preferred apocalypse and let me know what you think. Tell your friends, point them this way and let's do something fun again.

Going Friends Only [Jul. 2nd, 2008|06:15 pm]
Hey there LJ-Land. This journal is going friends only. If you're a lurker or simply someone I haven't added to my friends list (and a regular reader) please let me know if you'd like to be added so that you can continue to enjoy the frequently fluffy, sometimes serious, and (almost) always alliterative posts that I provide, free of charge, to the world at large.

Some posts (likes those in the vein of BLITEOTW) that are specifically meant for public consumption will remain public, but memes, politics and frank discussions of my personal doings and beliefs will no longer be broadcast.

For those of you that will be leaving us (by whom I mean me) at this juncture, we thank you for your patronage and wish you all the best. The rest of you lot....make sure I know to add you by commenting on this post.

BLITEOTW: Epilogue [Jun. 16th, 2008|05:29 pm]

In local news today, as cleanup from last week's crisis continues, another case of desperation and sadness has reached our ears here at Aggie Press. As rescuers continued to investigate parts of the flame scorched UC Davis campus, a small tragedy occurred when a room in the heavily damaged Chemistry Annex, apparently filled with cyanide gas, was breached, killing several over-enthusiastic volunteers. Investigators have since determined that the room's ventilation was sealed during the building's partial collapse. While volunteers had been instructed to follow strict safety protocols, particularly when investigating sites with hazardous materials, it seems the volunteers in question were simply poking around with shovels and work gloves. There names were not available at the time of printing.

It was not immediately clear what had caused the build up of the deadly gas, though Andrew Schultz, one of the leaders of the rescue operation on campus, has his own theory. "It's still hard to tell exactly what happened," says Schultz, "but based on the number of de-animated dead we found inside, I'm guessing that some industrious chemist, perhaps a professor, perhaps a student, tried something unorthodox as a means of escape or simple retaliation."

The Annex suffered heavy damage when a fire that started in the Chemistry building spread along the connecting corridors and damaged the upper stories, collapsing them onto the lower floors. None of the bodies inside the partially collapsed Annex have been seen to be in possession of any kind of filtration mask, suggesting that this may have indeed been a last ditch effort of someone who had run out of options. A broken bottle of hydrochloric acid was found in the rubble nearby, which when tested by experts, was determined to be the likely source of the cyanide gas. UC Davis Chemistry Professor Matt Kirth explained one likely process when we caught up to him digging through the remains of his office.

"It's pretty simple really. A little potassium cyanide, a bit of acid and presto, hydrogen cyanide gas. Nasty stuff, but pretty quick as far as I understand. Not pleasant, I imagine, but quick. Of course, those were all chem labs, so who knows what they used. There are tons of ways they could make that kind of stuff."

As rescuers continue to search for survivors in several collapsed buildings across campus there is still not good explanation for the rise of the "zombies" or their sudden disappearance early Saturday morning. Survivors have faced the grim task of rebuilding amidst tragedy and horror, and this latest incident stands as a stark reminder that not all the danger has passed. Still, volunteers' relentless quest for survivors stands as a shining example of how we can pull together and weather this crisis. Please remember to be vigilant and follow safety procedures.

I crashed hard on Friday night and didn't have the energy to really put up much of a story during the day. I hope you all enjoyed my much briefer story in comparison to last year's. Can't be the hero every year, right? After I got bit, I guess there wasn't much hope for me. At least I took a bunch of teh bastards with me. Who knew that HCN would take them out too?

Gah! [Jun. 13th, 2008|03:18 pm]
[Current Location |UCD]

I was walking over to Mrak to deal with some grading problem when a group of students on the back steps jumped me. I wasn't expecting it as they just seemed to be milling around and then they just kind of turned and the nearest one lunged at me. I tried to run into the building, but the door was locked for some reason and it looked like someone had done a number on the inside, overturning tables and strewing paper about. While I noticed this however, one of the stumbling students literally jumped on me and tried to bite my head. I threw him over my shoulder, turning so that he crashed into a couple buddies. I pushed another away from em and ran back over here. They followed for a bit, but gave up beating on the lab door. I think they might have gone to chase someone else. I heard a scream that I think came from the stairwells. I tried calling campus PD, but it just keeps kicking over to voice mail. Davis PD is busy, as is 911. What's going on?

As of right now I'm ok and locked in my lab. I'm looking out the windows and I see a couple other groups of students, even some profs or service workers maybe. I didn't get seriously hurt, just a scratch on my shoulder and a small cut on my head where the wacko tried to bite me. I think I dropped my cell phone when I got jumped and I don't have anyone's number. Does anyone know what's going on? Is this some kind of demonstration or attack? Frankly, I woke up hung over this morning and I'm not much in the mood to deal with this shit. I'm all alone in lab and dammit someone is pounding on the door again....leaving streaks of red on the window. It can't be blood, right?

Holy hell, what is going on? Is this really a zombie thing? I thought that was some kind of blogging joke or some stupid meme.

I think I need help.

Blog like it's the end of the world.

Stupid undergrads [Jun. 13th, 2008|01:22 pm]
[Tags|, ]

What's these people's deal?

Yesterday was graduation and then I went out for dinner with the parents and Tim. Nice time, Osteria Fasulo is back in top form with the return of their head chef Adam. On the way home we saw a bunch of people running across 5th and into those ag fields by 113. I figured they were students being dumb. Anyway, I got dropped off at home and slept in.

I got up this morning, threw on some clothes quick and headed into Sac for breakfast with the parents. I saw a couple empty cars on the cause way and there was an accident scene where one had apaprently jumped over the rail into water below. I guess it happened last night, cause no one was around, though it didn't look like they'd finished cleaning the area. There was one guy standing by the wreckage. I asked if he was ok and he just said uh-huh, so I drove off.

Anyway, breakfast was nice. Sacramento seemed to be hopping. Is teh Capital always that busy on Friday mornings? It seemed like there was a lot of security running around. They were shouting at some guy trying to break through a barricade and I actually saw them tackle the guy.

Mom and Rich hopped into their car to go to the airport. I told them to call me when they hit Vegas. I even gave them a couple bucks to throw in one of the airport slots. I jetted back to Davis. I had to go catch the bus as my bike was already on campus. The streets seem quiet except for a few dogs and cats and a couple random people. I saw some people stumbling about, a group of about 15 undergrads it looked like, but yesterday was the last day of finals and I figured people were just hung over. For all that though, campus is fairly deserted. I've had my nose buried in grading and I have to go upstairs and chat with sarah a bit.

I haven't had time to really catch up on LJ in a bit. Anything important I've missed?

Blog like it's the end of the world.

Zombie Meme [Jun. 6th, 2008|02:41 pm]
You are in a mall when the zombies attack. You have:

1. one weapon.
2. one song blasting on the speakers.
3. one famous person to fight alongside you.

Weapon can be real or fictional, you may assume endless ammo if applicable. Person can be real or fictional.
